Bouley Bay

The north coast is romantic and much indented, with small sandy bays nestling between the rocks. A long, winding hill leads down to Bouley Bay, a deep-water anchorage and the home of one of the Island’s scuba-diving schools.

The pebble beach may not be too comfortable, but this is a safe place for competent swimmers who do not mind being out of their depth. The old pier is a good place for fishermen and a bar and beach cafe facilities are among the other attractions.

Rozel

Rozel Bay is a quaint fishing harbour with a small sandy beach on the north east of the island. The beach is mixed sand, shingle and rocks and is safe for bathing, especially when the tide is in. Anglers appreciate the pier and everyone enjoys the cafes, tearooms, restaurants and the pub which can provide food and drink of all sorts, the Hungry Man being a favourite.

Other Reservoirs

Rozel woods is a pretty woodland that houses a small reservoir known as La Maseline. Not only are waterfowl present, moorhen in particular, but strikingly colourful dragonflies and damselflies constantly patrol the water during late summer. The reservoir is stocked with some fine fish, carp frequently appear close to the surface, and on warm days there’s a chance of spotting a terrapin basking on exposed logs. Add to this a wealth of birdsong in early summer and you have one of the most tranquil areas in which to spend a little time.

Durrell & Friends

Durrells is a charitable organisation that has been saving animals from extinction for over 50 years. It has a completely different focus from that of traditional zoos as the animals in Jersey are there as ambassadors for their species in the wild. Today, more and more animals are becoming endangered and the zoo which Durrell founded on Jersey has been one of the very few that has successfully mixed displaying animals to the public in a sensible and humane way with effective involvement in field conservation.
